4 Ways Contractors Can Celebrate Earth Day Everyday

Happy Earth Day! A movement started in the 70s by Senator Gaylord Nelson with the intention of raising awareness on protecting the environment.

According to DOZR, “building and construction are responsible for 39% of global carbon emissions.” So how can we make a difference not just one day a year, but every day?

  1. Clean jobsites - jobsite cleanliness not only helps the planet, but it also keeps you safe. Pick up garbage, recycle, store hazardous materials properly.

  2. Use sustainable materials as often as possible - Timber is considered one of the most sustainable materials. According to Buro Happold “with a low embodied carbon footprint, it can be used to maximize a project’s green credentials.” But there are other materials such as substituting cement with concrete, or even using electric machinery.

  3. Prevent wasting materials - Mistakes happen, but ensuring the work is done correctly the first time and the correct amount of materials and type of material is ordered will help reduce what is put in the garbage and what has to be re-done. Everything has a price.

  4. Protect existing foliage - Site work is a big part of construction, but it’s important to protect the greenery around the site or to plant new ones at the end of the project. Trees help reduce carbon and absorb pollutants in the atmosphere which helps to improve air quality.
